Creating Single, Parent, and Variant Products

How to manually create a new product in Plytix

In Plytix there are a few ways you can go about creating new products. You can choose to do a CSV import , create a scheduled feed that imports data from a file, FTP/SFTP or Dropbox connection, send data using our public API, or manually create a new product in the PIM. This article will walk you through the steps of manually creating single, parent, and variant products in Plytix.

Creating a Single Product

Single products are those without any variations, and are therefore sellable on their own.

When you create a new product, it will be a single by default. You can then choose to keep it as a single product or link variants so that it becomes a parent. The process of creating a new product is the same for both cases — it only differs when it comes to turning a product into a parent or variation after it has already been created.

  1. To create a new product, go to your Product Overview page and click ‘+ New product’

💡 You can use keyboard shortcuts to open the modal to create a new product.

2. In the popup window, add your product SKU and label.

ℹ️ Note that the SKU is a product’s unique identifier in Plytix, so it is the only required attribute Plytix does not accept duplicate SKUs.

You also have the option to add a “Label” to your product, though it is not required. A Label is a short-text identifier for your products, which makes it easier to find them in your PIM.

Then, choose the product family you want to assign your product to.

ℹ️ Assigning single products to a family is optional. Learn about creating and managing product families  here.

💡 If you are manually creating different products in a row, you can toggle on the option ‘Create another’ to avoid leaving the window.

3. Click ‘Create product’.

You will be redirected to the new product’s detail page, where you can access its different features.

ℹ️ All attributes from the family you selected are automatically added to the product. You can filter by attribute group to customize which attributes you want to view on the page.

Creating Parents and Variants

Parent products are also known as configurable or non-sellable products. They are the framework of a product that holds all the main characteristics of its sellable versions. Those sellable versions are known as variants in Plytix. Any product that has variants linked to it is considered a parent product in Plytix.

Variants are products linked to a parent and inherit the parent attributes with inheritance ON through the family they are a part of. They also have individual product attributes.

ℹ️ In Plytix, you can create up to 300 variants for each given parent.

Whenever you link variants to a single product, you are turning it into a parent product.

To add a variant to a parent product, go to a product’s detail page. In the “Variants” tab, click ‘Add a variant’.

You can either link an existing product as a variant or create a new product.

ℹ️ Only single products within the same family can be linked as variants to a product. If you want to link a product that is outside of the family you selected, you must first add that product to the family of your parent product. If there are no single products in the family you selected, you can only create new products as variants. Click to learn how to assign products to families here.

If there are single products in the family you selected, you will have two options when adding a variant:

  1. Create a new product as a variant
  2. Link an existing product as a variant
